CASE STUDY: Waltham Abbey Royal Gunpowder Mills
The Waltham Abbey Royal Gunpowder Mills were in operation for over 300 years. The site became involved in the development of revolutionary nitro-based explosives and propellants known as ‘Smokeless Powder’.
Set in 175 acres of parkland stand an impressive collection of 21 buildings of major historical interest. We were contracted to carry out the external painting of these buildings during recent refurbishment works.

Case Study: Thaxstead Church
Thaxstead Church is claimed to be ‘The Cathedral of Essex’. Built 1380-1510, some 400 years later Gustav Holst lived in Thaxstead, and in 1914 he composed his world famous ‘The Planets’ suite. The magnificent organ, rumoured to have been played by Holst himself, was carefully protected during recent decoration by Keith and his team inside the historical church.
“We used a specialised cherry picker to reach 10m high in order to carefully dust and paint the walls with 5 coats of lime wash to transform the walls which had been discoloured by centuries of candle use” says Keith. “We discovered prestigeous, long lost wall paintings as we gently cleaned the walls” he continued. Such painstaking work also meant Keith and his team were able to monitor any bat movements within the ancient church.
